TreoSpot is a Location Based Reminder utility for Palm Treo GSM smartphones. Once you set-up the TreoSpot database, you can enable it to give alerts when you are in a specific area. This is useful in case you need to remember something (e.g., buy groceries, etc.) when you are in a particular place.
Operation
Invoking TreoSpot from Palm launcher will display the TreoSpot Preferences form.
Settings
Disable if Data Session is Active: TreoSpot requires an active GPRS connection to be shutdown for acquiring location data, but both shutting down and restarting GPRS are time-consuming (sometimes upto 5 seconds each). You can enable this option to prevent any active sessions from being disconnecting. TreoSpot will not function if this setting is enabled, if any GPRS session is connected.
Add new locations to DB: When TreoSpot detects a new loction not in its database, it can be added to the database. This setting must be enabled during initial operation as there is not other way to build the TreoSpot locations database.
Add Auto: TreoSpot can add new locations to the database without prompting for the location name if this setting is enabled. This is useful is you don't want to be disturbed while driving etc. The GID will be used for the location name in this case.
Once you build the database, you can tap on the location name to pop-up the "Edit Location" form, you can enter or edit the details as required. The options are self-explanatory.
The [X] Button: This button may be used to manually acquire the current location and add it to the database. However, if a new location is added to the list, THE LIST IS NOT REFRESHED, you will have to exit and re-launch TreoSpot to see the newly added location. The [X] button is meant for testing purposes only and will be removed in subsequent releases. Also, you may have to wait upto three seconds before the alert is displayed.
From v1.3 on, TreoSpot has phone options settings; you can automatically set timezone, volume and theme when you switch locations. If you already use older versions of TreoSpot you will have to completely uninstall it (including TreoSpotDB) or you will get resets.
Limitations of TreoSpot
TreoSpot will shutdown any active GPRS connection to query location information. This is because of limitations imposed by the Palm Treo hardware and API.
You may find increased battery drain in your Treos. This because of the use of the serial connection to obtain location information from the radio.
